Familias Latinas Por La Educación empowers Latino parents and guardians to develop solutions they want to see in their local schools

Salem, MassachusettsLatinos For Education announced the expansion of its leadership program for adult relatives of school-aged children – Familias Latinas Por La Educación – to Salem, Massachusetts with an inaugural cohort of eight parents. For the past three years, the program has helped Latino families in Houston, Texas – especially Spanish speaking families – develop and advocate for policies and solutions that make the education system more accessible and responsive to the needs of Latino students.

As part of Familias Latinas Por La Educación, parents gain a deeper understanding of how decisions are made at the school campus level as well as the school district level, they explore data trends on how schools are performing, and develop strategies and advocate for policies that support Latino students excel academically and emotionally.

“We know Latino parents value their children’s education and want to make sure their children receive the opportunities they need to eventually go to college and succeed in life. However, understanding, navigating and participating in the education system isn’t always accessible to Latino families, especially those from immigrant backgrounds or who speak languages other than English at home. This program provides families with the tools, resources and network they need to be change agents and actively participate in their children’s education,” said Jorge Fanjul, Executive Director of Latinos for Education, Massachusetts.

Latino students make up 47% of the student population in Salem, therefore it is critical that their parents and guardians have a voice in the school district and local schools. The parents who are part of Familias Latinas Por La Educación in Salem are from the Dominican Republic, Brazil and Haiti, and include:

  • Yenny Andujar
  • Nalva Duarte
  • Stephanie German
  • Marleny Hernandez
  • Valerie Joseph
  • Francisca “Mariela” Lara
  • Raquel Rodriguez
  • Maria “Yaira” Ruiz
